Poetic Translations: Naomi Shemer, The Middle of Tammuz

Third and last poetic translation for tonight, Naomi Shemer's The Middle of Tammuz

The middle of Tammuz

How sad to die in the middle of Tammuz
With summer flags waving for us all.
A dove on the flag post cooing without cease,
As cheers for summer, cheers for harvest fall.

How sad to die in the middle of Tammuz
Just when the peaches in every orchard call,
Just when the fruit is laughing in its basket
And cheers for summer, cheers for harvest fall

How sad to die in the middle of Tammuz
But in the middle of Tammuz I’ll die.
In orchards full of orphaned fruit
Cheer after cheer will surely fall
On your summer, on your harvest,
On it all

Poetic Translations -- Haim Guri, Farewell Song for a Comrade

Here's another poetic translation: Haim Guri's Farewell Song For a Comrade

Farewell Song for a Comrade

At a fork in the path we saw you slowly returning
And we thought we should say two words of farewell to you, comrade,
As our first spring in freedom stretched out on the carpet of flowers
With white orange-petals below the moon’s sickle-shaped petal.
We saw you returning, older than ever and weary
In a grey army shirt, passing by, treading quietly.
The heavens were wide and the night was ancient and peaceful –
Exactly the same as those nights of action and bullets.
But this night is quiet, with no smoke, with no fire. Can that be? It’s a mystery.
And the people that mustered its soldiers and arranged them in ranks for the battle
Won’t forget your first gift and will carry your name in memorial.
 Haim Guri

Poetic translations: - Yehonatan Gefen, The Little Prince

Recently I have had the opportunity to translate a few Hebrew poems into English, so I'd like to share them here. The first one is Jonathan (Yehonatan) Gefen's The Little Prince:

The Little Prince
I met him in the heart of the desert
Sunset helps a sorrowing heart
I drew him a tree and a lamb
And he promised that he would return

The little prince of Company B
Will see no more lambs eating flowers
All his roses are thorns today
And his little heart is cold as ice

If you ever come this way
You will know that this is where he fell
Fell without making a sound
On the soft sand below

And if a young child appears
With laughing face and golden hair
You will know him and hold out your hand
To brush desert dust from his eyes

Then do me a little favor
And write to all our mothers
Let them breathe again and wipe away their tears
For the little prince has returned

The little prince of Company B
Will see no more lambs eating flowers
All his roses are thorns today
And his little heart is cold as ice

I met him in the heart of the desert
