Midrash on Parashat Korahh

דבר אל בני ישראל וקח מאתם מטה מטה לבית אב מאת כל נשיאהם לבית אבותם שנים עשר מטות וכתיב בתריה והיה האיש אשר אבחר בו מטהו יפרח

אמר משה לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, רבונו של עולם, אתמול אמרת לי הקרב אליך את אהרן אחיך וקידשתי אותו ואת בניו לכַהן לך, והיום אתה אומר לי האיש אשר אבחר בו מטהו יפרח ואתה אומר לי והשכתי מעלי את תלנות בני ישראל אשר הם מלינים עליכם?! הרי הם ילינו אפילו יותר ויאמרו שאתה גונב את דעתם ובוחר במי שכבר בחרת בו!

אמר לו הקב"ה, חייך בן עמרם, כדי שלא תרבה מחלוקת בישראל, אני אעקור מהתורה כל פסוק ופסוק שכתוב בו שמו של אהרן ואכתוב במקומו שמו של האיש שיימצא הגון לפני ושנוחה דעתו של העם הימנו, כי רק הוא ראוי ליכנס לפני ולפנים והקטיר קטורת ולכפר על חטאותם.

והיה לבו של משה מצערו על אדת אהרן אחיו. הלך משה אל אהלו של אהרן וישב על האדמה לפניו ובכה ואמר לו, אהרון אחי, הקדוש ברוך צווני ליקח מטות לבית אבות ולבחר כהן חדש תחתיך

קם אהרן על רגליו ושחק ואמר לו, משה אחי! וכי על זה אתה בוכה? המקנא אתה לי? באמת אמר קרח בן דודנו כל העדה כלם קדשים ובתוכם ה' ואני אינני ראוי לכהונה יותר מהפחות שבישראל! ולואי שהקדוש ברוך הוא יטול ממני את הכבוד הזה שלא ביקשתי ויתן אותו לאיש אשר יימצא הגון לפניו ודעתם של כל העם נוחה הימנו!

באותה שעה החל הנגף בעם וכל אחד היה מבקש להציל את נפשו. אחד היה לוקה במגפה וכל הקרובים אליו היו פוחדים ובורחים ממנו, וכך היתה המגפה מתפשטת והולכת בכל המחנה, עד שבא אהרן עם הקטורת ושם את הלוקים במגפה בצד אחד ואלה שלא לקו בצד אחד, והיה מפריד בינהם בגופו כמו שנאמר ויעמד בין המתים ובין החיים ותעצר המגפה

ראו כל בני ישראל את מעשי אהרן ואמרו, אהרן חס על כבודו ועל נפשו ורץ להציל את ישראל כמו שהיה רץ תמיד לפייס כל אחד שהיה לו ריב עם חברו, ואין מי שראוי לכהונה יותר הימנו!

מיד פרח מטה אהרן לבית לוי ויצא פרח ויצץ ציץ ויגמל שקדים

ומדוע גמל שקדים? ללמדך שמה שקדים טעמם ערב הן בדבש הן במלח, כך דברי תורה נשמעים הן מתוך צער והן מתוך שמחה, ומה שקדים אין אדם יכול לאכול שקד אחד אלא נוטל ואוכל עד שהוא גומר קערה שלמה, כך דברי תורה אין אדם שמתעסק אתם יכול למשוך ידו ולבו מהם לעולם.

And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods … And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud (Numbers 17: 16-20)

Moses said to the Holy One, Blessed be He, "Master of the Universe! Earlier you said to me Bring thou near unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that they may minister unto Me in the priest's office (Exodus 28: 1), and now you say to me the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.. They will murmur still more, claiming that we are pulling the wool over their eyes and choosing Aaron after he has already been appointed as High Priest!

God answered him and said, "Really, son of Amram! Do you not realize that in order to prevent disputes among the people of Israel I would wipe out every verse in my Torah that mentions Aaron and replace it with the name of whoever is worthy in my sight and acceptable to the whole community. Only such a one is fit to bring the incense into the Holy of Holies and atone for their sins.

Even so, Moses grieved for his brother's sake. He went to Aaron's tent and sat before him on the ground and wept, and said to him "Brother Aaron, the Holy One Blessed be He has commanded me to take rods from each tribe and choose a new High Priest instead of you."

Aaron sprang to his feet and laughed, saying "Brother Moses! Is that any reason to weep? Are you jealous for my sake? Our cousin Korahh was right when he said All the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them (Numbers 16: 1). I am not more worthy to be High Priest than the least among the people of Israel, and I only wish that the Holy One Blessed be He would take away from me this honour that I never asked for and appoint someone instead of me who is worthy in His sight and acceptable to the whole community.

At that moment the plague began among the people and everyone tried to save their own life. When one person was struck by the plague, everyone near panicked and ran away, and so the plague was spread throughout the whole camp, until Aaron came with the incense and separated those suffering from the plague from those who were free from it and stood between them, as the verse says He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. (Numbers 17: 13).

All the people saw Aaron's actions and cried out, "Aaron was not concerned for his own honour or even his own life and ran to save our lives, just as he always ran to appease anyone who had quarrelled. Nobody is more worthy than he to be the High Priest!"

Immediately the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe almonds (Numbers 17: 23.

Why did it bear almonds? To teach you that just as almonds taste pleasant both with sugar and with salt, so the Torah speaks to us both in times of grief and in times of joy; and just as nobody can eat only one almond but will go on eating them and finish a whole bowl full, so anybody who begins to study Torah will never be able to turn away from it.
