This Midrash is dedicated to the memory of my rabbi and teacher Rabbi Dr. Louis Jacobs, who was summoned to the heavenly academy last Shabbat, 5 Tammuz 5766 (1 July 2006)

בזכותם של אתונו של בלעם ואילו של אברהם אבינו צווה הקב"ה לנח לעשות תבה ולהביא אליה מכל עוף בהמה ורמש ולהציל אותם ממי המבול.

עלה בדעתו של הקב"ה לשחת את כת הבהמות ולברוא חדשות, כמ"ש (בראשית ו' ז') מֵאָדָם עַד בְּהֵמָה עַד רֶמֶשׂ וְעַד עוֹף הַשָּׁמָיִם , וקבלו לפניו אותה אתון ואותו איל ואמרו "רבונו של עולם! אתה בראת אותנו בערב שבת בין השמשות וצוית אותנו לעשות את רצונך בעוד כמה וכמה דורות, ועכשיו אתה אומר מאדם עד בהמה?”

אמר להם, “חייכם שרק בזכותכם אני אצווה לנח לבנות תבה ולהביא אילה מִכָּל הָחַי מִכָּל בָּשָׂר שְׁנַיִם מִכֹּל (בראשית ו' י”ט), וזש"ה זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה זכר — בזכות אילו של אברהם, נקבה — בזכות אתונו של בלעם.

ולא עוד אלא דרככם אני עתיד לגאול את ישראל באחרית הימים שנאמר(ישעיה כ"ז י"ג) וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִתָּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל ואמרו ז"ל (פרקי דרבי אליעזר ל') זו קרן ימין של האיל שהיא גדולה משל שמאל. ונאמר (זכריה ט' ט') הִנֵּה מַלְכֵּךְ יָבוֹא לָךְ צַדִּיק וְנוֹשָׁע הוּא עָנִי וְרֹכֵב עַל חֲמוֹר וְעַל עַיִר בֶּן אֲתֹנוֹת"

האתון ראתה את מלאך ה' שלש פעמים וניצלה ממנה בזכות כנסת ישראל.

בפעם הראשונה כתוב וַתֵּט הָאָתוֹן מִן הַדֶּרֶךְ וַתֵּלֶךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה (במדבר כ"ב כ"ג), כנגד כנסת ישראל שאמרה לְכָה דוֹדִי נֵצֵא הַשָּׂדֶה (שה"ש ז' י"ב)

בפעם השניה כתוב וַיַּעֲמֹד מַלְאַךְ ה' בְּמִשְׁעוֹל הַכְּרָמִים (במדבר כ"ב כ"ד), כנגד כנסת ישראל שאמרה אֶשְׁכֹּל הַכֹּפֶר דּוֹדִי לִי בְּכַרְמֵי עֵין גֶּדִי (שה"ש א' י"ד)

בפעם השלישית כתוב וַתֵּרֶא הָאָתוֹן אֶת-מַלְאַךְ ה' וַתִּרְבַּץ תַּחַת בִּלְעָם (במדבר כ"ב כ"ז), כנגד כנסת ישראל שאמרה הַגִּידָה לִּי שֶׁאָהֲבָה נַפְשִׁי אֵיכָה תִרְעֶה אֵיכָה תַּרְבִּיץ בַּצָּהֳרָיִם (שה"ש א' ז')

It was for the sake of Abraham's ram and Balaam's ass that the Holy One, Blessed be He, commanded Noah to build the ark and bring into it two of every living thing to save them from the flood.

At first He intended to destroy all the animals and create them afresh, as it is written (Genesis 6:7) I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the air, but the ram and the ass protested before Him and said, "Master of the Universe! You created us on the eve of the first Shabbat and commanded us to to fulfil your commandment in the future, and now you say 'I will blot out both man and beast'!?"

He said to them, "For your sake I will command Noah to build an ark and bring into it of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort (Genesis 6:19)". This is hinted by the verse: male and female: male — for the sake of Abraham's ram; female — for the sake of Balaam's ass.

"What is more, through you I will redeem Israel at the end of days, as it is written (Isaiah 27:13) And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great horn shall be blown (Pirkei de'Rabbi Eliezer interprets this as referring to the right horn of Abraham's ram, which is greater than the left), and it is written (Zechariah 9:9) behold, thy king cometh unto thee, he is triumphant, and victorious, lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass."

Three times the ass saw the angel of the Lord, and each time she was saved through the merit of the Congregation of Israel.

The first time it is written (Numbers 22:23) the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field, corresponding to the Congregation of Israel who said come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field (Song of Songs 7:12).

The second time it is written (Numbers 22:24) the angel of the LORD stood in a hollow way between the vineyards, corresponding to the Congregation of Israel who said my beloved is unto me as a cluster of henna in the vineyards of En-gedi (Song of Songs 1:14).

The third time it is written (Numbers 22:27) the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she lay down, corresponding to the Congregation of Israel who said tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to lie down at noon (Song of Songs 1: 7.
